SPOTTED IN THE WILD: AUGUST 2025
IT’S NATIONAL SANDWICH MONTH! It’s National Sandwich Month!?! How could I have not known that August was NATIONAL SANDWICH MONTH!
In honor of National Sandwich Month, and this is a sandwich blog, and also perhaps most importantly (to me), that I should blog more often, I needed to pop in and drop some sandwich news. So let’s jump in.
If you haven’t read about the sandwich heard ‘round the world, you may be sleeping on a hero with a hero. As The New York Times reported (gift article), a man a-salt-ed a federal agent in DC this past week. Oh, and there’s video:
First of all, a sandwich being used as a weapon is absolutely my m.o. and I salute this ‘wich king. Secondly, the way he pelts the guy in the chest and then takes off running is so perfect in comedic execution, I think this man deserves an award at the Kennedy Center, with Trump in attendance. Third, I think I should work on a FASCIST! FASCIST! footlong recipe (“I’ll have the fascist fascist footlong, please.”) Thoughts?
Speaking of recipes, I follow foodbaby.bklyn on instagram, and she recently created a BLT with roasted corn mayo:
I love a BLT. I actually have a foolproof — and super simple — vegetarian one. Wait, do I have a picture? Why, yes, I do!
My friends say including a picture where you can see feet is good for SEO. Does that include blurry shots? We’ll see.
This is absolutely not special in any way, but I want to make sure that, if you want a good fakin' pick, I got you:
Sourdough, toasted
Heirloom or organic fat summer tomato, sliced (let the tomatoes rest in salt and pepper while you cook up the following…)
Morningstar Farms Bacon Strips, sizzled up in a skillet to desired done-ness
Duke’s Mayo (I do not negotiate with terrorists; this is the only mayo I use)
Super crispy romaine or iceberg (don’t be a hater, iceberg is perfectly great on a BLT)
Assemble and chow down!
She also asks, what does your sandwich preference say about you? Her choice is the BLT, and while I love them, my absolute favorite sandwich has gotta be a grilled cheese. But what does that say about me? I think it says that I’m a combination of classic and minimalistic. Y’see, I do know the allure of a Katz’s pastrami or a NY Italian Sub, but I’ve been a grilled cheese girl since I learned how to make them at 5 years old under the tutelage of Dad. Plus, it’s a relatively vegetarian pick and that’s who I am now.
We’ll dive more into “fave sandwiches” when I finally get around to posting about Colbert’s Questionert, which has some of the most amazing answers from celebrities about their favorite sandwich.
That’s all for this month, folks! Hope you’re enjoying Leo season with some most excellent summer produce bounty. Put it between a couple slices of bread (like my friend Holt did with peaches, inspired by this Bon Appetit sandwich!!), and you got yourself a meal.
Spotted in the Wild is SUPPOSED to be a monthly barrage of sandwich content that has nothing to do with war movies, or war, or movies, necessarily. There are constant sandwich posts online that I stumble upon, and I wanted to make sure you could stumble on them too. Bon appetit!
